Tashtego Surfwear is a passion project clothing brand. The name and identity are inspired by the Moby Dick character Tashtego, a skilled harpooner from Martha’s Vineyard. The brand pays homage to this representation of the island, featuring two primary logomarks. The first is strong and simple, claiming a clean and ownable mark for the identity. The secondary pays direct homage to Martha’s Vineyard, drawn from the iconic Menemsha statue. A hand-lettered wordmark brings character and a unique unity to the design, while a casual, loose script typeface adds classic surfwear fluidity. The initial clothing line was designed thoughtfully at every level, with detailed tech packs outlining dimensions and material choices for each piece. The goal was to create gear that is functional, durable, and timeless, blending vintage surfwear aesthetics with coastal lifestyle needs. Production challenges led to putting the project on hold rather than compromising quality, but the vision remains a favorite and one I hope to pursue in the future.
